Studio Talk, Vol. 20, September 2005, page 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

What’s new this season? Let’s see…beautiful jewel tones, brown is the ‘new black’, pants of every description, the continuing importance of skirts and jackets, exquisite knitwear, the little shrug and lots of suede…yada, yada, yada…

But is anything ever really new? Short of a three-legged trouser, it’s all been done. The phenomenon of fashion has always been to keep us interested, so each season the market hypes a new look, a new must have… ergo, a new reason to shop. And we do, because fashion is fun. Without becoming fashion victims, who doesn’t need a little update or tweak to feel current?

What’s really new is that the generation gap in fashion is blurring. We no longer dress like our mothers, but whether you’re 35 or 65, we’re also not supposed to dress like our daughters.

“You’re not actually going out looking like that … are you?
Is that you talking to your daughter or is it your daughter talking to you?

Even we, Brookline’s very own fashionistas, promised ourselves years ago to be each other’s eyes. If one of us crossed the line, we vowed to tell her in no uncertain terms. Like sisters in a secret society, we sealed a pact that ultimately went beyond our handshake and included all of you. As the good book says, ‘know thy limits’.

Marcie’s daughter Leigh enters the workplace this year and is traumatized by the need for a wardrobe that has no resemblance to the one she is leaving. She can no longer go out looking like that, at least not in the boardroom. In the past we would never shop in the same stores as our mothers, but Leigh got her interview suit at The Studio and also got the job!

So what does this mean for all of us who fall between the ages of young womanhood and, shall we say, modern maturity? We all want to look our best, and that means being mindful of that line.

What’s really new? Innovative fashion for the modern ageless woman and her daughter, who look in the mirror and like what they see.

Sandy, Marcie & Ilene
