Who is Christopher Blue? Have you ever wondered
about the man behind your jeans (no pun intended) and why his brand is
one of the top selling jeans in Neiman’s? We got the opportunity
to talk to the brains behind the label, who isn’t at all blue (having
recently sold his business for untold millions) and isn’t named
Christopher. His real name is Mel Matsui and he lives in Redmond,
Washington along with the love of his life and Christopher Blue
co-founder Barbara.

SMI: To begin with…Redmond, Washington?
Mel: My family was there and after several years in LA, this is where we
wanted to be.
SMI: In some of your promotional material you talk about
“fitwithout foolishness or vulgarity” - care to expand upon that?
Mel: Our customer is not a prisoner of fashion. She’s all about
comfort, body confidence and dressing appropriately. Our fit was based
on the belief that cleavage belongs in front and above the waist. Let’s
rid the world of indecent exposure.
SMI: Everyone of the 100 or more jeans companies out there seems
to have some kind of philosophy. What’s yours?
Mel: Work hard, keep it simple, fit matters most, use only the
best fabrics, lead, don’t follow, execute perfectly.
SMI: We’ve been told to stick with retail because of the millions
of calamities inherent in manufacturing. What was your worst nightmare?
Mel: Actually, it was when I was in retail; my sympathies ladies
SMI: What can we expect next?
Mel: We’re actually in the process of developing new fabrics.
Everyone loved tencel years back, but it had it’s problems. We’re now
adding some lycra; I’m excited about it.
SMI: How many yards of denim do you use annually?
Mel: 2 million yards. How many football fields would that cover?
SMI: How could we get you to our trunk show?
Mel: Tickets to a Red Sox game, or if it doesn’t stop raining in
Seattle.
