| Give
Us Something Real
September 1997 |
When
was the last time you read anything meaningful in a woman's magazine?
We were cheering when we read this: "So, all you publishers of
women's magazines, listen up: Give us something real. Go ahead
and keep Kate Moss on your pages, but show us someone who has some
meat on her bones, too, someone whose face may be plain but whose
voice is strong. Show us women who are harried, hardworking, short,
confident, ethnic, old, fearful, lesbian, tired, questioning, sloppy,
adrift in their motherhood, content with their big hip. Show us women
like us."
Cynthia Dockrell, The Boston Globe, February 1997
Another cheer - for the Body Shop poster campaign: "There are
three billion women who don't look like supermodels and only eight
who do." It's worth checking out this poster, the image is great.

POLITICS |
| What's
easier to put off than the big "closet change-over?" Does
the first frost find you pushing aside sundresses to reach for your
parka? Well, hope springs eternal... Seventh Avenue is finally responding
to the modern woman's ultimate goal of versatility and value in their
wardrobes by making sure seasonless clothing becomes a staple.
Can we assume a revolution is in the making? New fabrications are
appearing that can be worn year round. A small victory, but surely
an acknowledgment that the industry is listening. |
