Studio Talk, Vol. 17, Spring 2004, page 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Opening Day

Jimmy Carter is president; the US and China establish diplomatic relations and Margaret Thatcher is elected Britain’s first woman prime minister. The Voyager sends photos of Jupiter back to earth and The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet hits the best seller list. The Shah leaves Iran and women surpass men in college enrollments for the first time. A first class stamp is 15 cents; the Dow hits 907; gas is eighty-six cents a gallon and the Supreme Court unanimously rules that busing may be used to achieve racial desegregation. The Soviets invade Afghanistan; Mother Theresa wins the Nobel peace prize and three women (twins and their best friend) amidst children and other related domestic travails, want something more.
Have you guessed? The year is 1979 and the trio’s unresolved entrepreneurial ambitions give birth to The Studio.

If we look back and knew then what we know now, we might not have taken that plunge, but naiveté and inexperience, however foolish at that time was the stuff of which dreams are made. We approach our 25th anniversary this April with great pride in not only growing a successful business, but in nurturing it through many challenges. We have learned retail inside out, but the most valuable lessons were taught by you our friends, customers and staff.

It wasn’t easy being businesswomen in 1979. Banks thought women without MBAs were bad risks, and when the economy faltered in the early 80’s, the first loans called in were . . . you’re right again – women owned small businesses. We managed and as the economy recovered, guess who came back to solicit our business? And when it became more than the three of us could handle, angels appeared and stayed - Bobbi Entner (20 years) and Carol Goldberg (15 years). Others joined them: Susan, Ellen J., Suzanne, Carol L., Ellen F., Collette and Angie who have enriched our lives and hopefully touched yours as well.

By the late eighties business was booming and the retail pundits wanted us to open more Studios, but Ilene would be in one, Sandy the other, and Marcie yet another. We had growing families and chose instead a manageable career and family. We’ve never regretted that decision.

For twenty- five years we’ve dressed you, your daughters, friends and relatives for graduations, job interviews, engagements, marriages motherhood and just plain life. We’ve watched you grow up alongside us, sharing each others joys and sorrows. Sandy’s cancer and her brave decision to share her battle through a memorable “bald” postcard 3 years ago touched everyone and women left kerchiefs and wigs home, feeling at home at The Studio. With your help we raised over $10,000 for the Dana Farber Cancer Center.

To quote the famous philosopher, Ilene Epstein, “one of life’s greatest adventures is that of raising a child.” The Studio has been our child - and, like a child, has never failed to amaze and delight.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your loyalty and friendship. It couldn’t have happened without you.

Love, Sandy, Marcie & Ilene
