No
one has ever accused us of not having anything to say. We do not
always follow the dictates of Seventh Avenue, which often sells
styles and fads that very few of us can wear. Our mission has always
been to make sense of this crazy fashion world and bring you clothes
that make you feel good and look beautiful. Sure we sell clothes,
but we don't mince words about Seventh Avenue's inability to
recognize "real women." |

Keeping
all this in mind, we began a series of community based
projects in order to create a dialogue. Our first event was Women
in Television: Homicide, Life on the Streets. It was a
"sell-out" at our local art deco theatre and
benefited two local charities. The next event was Body
& Soul: The Politics of Fashion. The evening included
the screening of a thoughtful documentary about one women's
feelings of self-worth, a provocative lecture by noted women's
study scholar Jean Kilbourne, regarding the role
advertisers play in promoting unhealthy images of women and a Studio
fashion show using customers as models, sized 2-14; ages
25-65. An audience of over 400 people attended, many of whom
brought their daughters. This evening benefited Rosie's
Place, the first women's shelter to open in Boston, and
raised over $10,000 and many a consciousness.
We are proud of our voices and those of the women we know. Our
newsletter, Studio Talk, is our voice and and we have
archived excerpts. Less formal are the discussions and ideas
passed around in The Studio every day. We hope to
continue the 'conversation' through future events, our
newsletters and good old-fashioned "shop talk." |

p.s.
We applaud Nike for this first-rate advertisement:
"A
Woman is often measured by the things she cannot control. She
is measured by the way her body curves or doesn't curve, by
where she is flat or straight or round. She is measuredby
36-24-36 and inches and ages and numbers, by all the outside
things that don't ever add up to who she is on the inside. And
so if a woman is to be measured, let her be measured by the
things she can control, by who she is and who she is trying to
become. Because as every woman knows, measurements are only
statistics. And STATISTICS LIE." |
